Malaysia has set its sights on securing a total of 33 medals, comprising six gold, seven silver, and 20 bronze, at the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. Scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4, the Games present a significant opportunity for Malaysian athletes. Chef de Mission Mohd Sumali Reduan expressed confidence in this medal target, citing the athletes’ current form, recent performances, and the competitive landscape across Asia as factors that support these ambitions.

With a focus on 13 sports deemed to have significant medal potential, Malaysia aims to excel in events such as track cycling, badminton, archery, diving, and squash. Other sports identified include sepak takraw, hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. The Malaysian team will feature 352 athletes and 185 officials, competing across 30 of the 43 sports available at the Games, participating in 156 of the 469 events.

Leading the Malaysian contingent, wushu athlete Tan Cheong Min has been honored with the role of flag-bearer for the Asian Games. Meanwhile, track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang is also anticipated to make a significant impact, potentially boosting Malaysia’s medal tally with his performance. These athletes are expected to be key contributors to the nation’s overall success at the Games.

In addition to the main event, Malaysia’s delegation aims for further success at the Asian Para Games, which are set to occur from October 18 to 24. The target for this event is similarly ambitious, with goals of six gold, 10 silver, and 18 bronze medals. This underscores Malaysia’s commitment to achieving excellence across both able-bodied and para-athletic competitions on the Asian stage.
