Inspect Fuselages for Cracks: Boeing 737 Max Operators Directed Urgently

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has mandated inspections for Boeing 737 Max aircraft to check for potential cracks in a key structural component of the fuselage. This directive will impact around 471 aircraft, with inspections slated to commence in September. The focal point of these inspections is the bear strap, which is a structural sheet that supports the fuselage around the aircraft’s exit doors. This action follows the discovery of similar cracks in older models of the Boeing 737 Next Generation, which led to inspections of those aircraft.

While no cracks have been reported in the 737 Max fleet to date, regulators have noted that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with the older models, suggesting a potential for the issue to manifest. The FAA cautioned that any undetected cracks could compromise a critical structural component, potentially affecting the plane’s overall integrity.

Boeing has been actively collaborating with airlines to address this issue since its identification in 2019 and has expressed support for the mandated inspections. The company emphasized that these checks are intended to detect and rectify any problems before the cracks escalate to critical levels.

This latest requirement adds to the ongoing scrutiny faced by the 737 Max series following previous safety incidents and concerns over the aircraft’s manufacturing and engineering quality. The model was previously grounded worldwide after two tragic crashes in 2018 and 2019, which resulted in heightened regulatory and public attention.
