Malaysia has announced an increase in the monthly electricity consumption threshold eligible for household subsidies from 600kWh to 800kWh, as revealed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This adjustment, effective immediately and lasting until December 31, is designed to alleviate the financial burden on households amid heightened electricity usage due to recent hot weather and haze.
Households consuming up to 800kWh per month will benefit from exemptions on the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA), retail charges, and the Sales and Service Tax (SST), according to the revised policy. The government aims to address cost-of-living pressures while ensuring sustainable energy practices.
The AFA mechanism, which came into effect in July 2025, allows for monthly adjustments to electricity tariffs based on fluctuating fuel prices, potentially leading to rebates or additional charges for consumers. This system is part of Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to balance affordability, supply security, and long-term energy sustainability.
