Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the country will tackle the Myanmar refugee issue by balancing national security concerns and the well-being of its citizens. This approach comes as Malaysia collaborates with Myanmar for the voluntary and phased return of refugees, emphasizing stronger enforcement and coordination among government agencies.
In recent discussions between the two nations, an agreement was reached to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of 5,000 Myanmar refugees in stages. The initial phase includes 1,476 refugees who have already commenced the repatriation process, following the completion of procedures established by both countries.
Prime Minister Anwar highlighted the refugee issue as a longstanding challenge impacting Malaysia’s security, social services, and administrative systems. He stressed that while the government’s strategy would adhere to national laws, it would also incorporate humanitarian considerations.
The Malaysian government is working closely with Myanmar and other countries of origin to ensure a coordinated effort in managing the repatriation process. This initiative aims to address the pressures that the refugee situation has placed on Malaysia, while also safeguarding the interests of its citizens.
