Peter Cullen, the celebrated Canadian voice actor renowned for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away at the age of 85. His family confirmed that Cullen died peacefully on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by loved ones.

Originating from Montreal, Cullen’s career began in the Canadian television and radio scene before he became a legendary figure in voice acting. He first brought Optimus Prime to life in the 1984 Transformers animated series and continued to voice the beloved character in seven blockbuster films from 2007 to 2023, as well as in numerous spin-offs. Cullen’s portrayal of Eeyore, the endearing yet gloomy donkey from Winnie the Pooh, also became a significant part of his legacy, with his voice featured in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and various related projects.

Beyond these iconic roles, Cullen’s voice graced other memorable characters. He played KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in the TV series Knight Rider. Additionally, he provided the eerie clicking sounds for the creature in the 1987 film Predator and voiced King Kong in the 1976 movie remake. Peter Cullen attributed part of his success to his older brother Larry, a former captain in the US Marine Corps, who inspired him to shape Optimus Prime’s character as a true hero, embodying strength without aggression. His contributions to the industry were further recognized with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
