The Maldives and Malaysia are exploring a new economic initiative aimed at boosting bilateral relations, with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu expressing support for Malaysia’s consideration of a US$100 million currency swap facility. This initiative is anticipated to enhance economic cooperation between the two nations.

In addition to the currency swap proposal, both countries have reached an agreement in principle to initiate negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). President Muizzu highlighted these developments as crucial steps toward expanding trade and creating new business opportunities within the Maldives and Malaysia.

The currency swap facility is expected to be implemented through Bank Negara Malaysia and the Maldives Monetary Authority, although specific terms and mechanisms are still under discussion. This announcement comes on the heels of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s state visit to the Maldives, which took place on September 14-15.

During Prime Minister Anwar’s visit, discussions between the two countries centered on expanding cooperation in various sectors, including trade and investment, education, healthcare, tourism, sustainable development, Islamic affairs, and defense. These talks underscore the commitment of both nations to strengthen ties across multiple domains.

Moreover, the Maldives and Malaysia have agreed to work together more closely through international organizations such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Commonwealth. This cooperative spirit is expected to further solidify their partnership on the global stage.
