Indonesia is advocating for a transparent and impartial process in selecting the next United Nations Secretary-General, highlighting the necessity for strong leadership to enhance multilateral cooperation amid global tensions. The country is closely observing the ongoing selection process, following the seventh round of informal voting at the UN Security Council on October 30.

The Indonesian government emphasized the importance of adhering to the UN Charter and promoting international cooperation principles during this selection. As the process continues, Indonesia acknowledged the candidacy of Lana Nusseibeh, nominated by the United Arab Emirates, and stressed that the next Secretary-General must foster unity among nations, respect for international law, and advance reforms within the UN.

Jakarta also underscored the need for developing countries to have a stronger voice in global decision-making and for the UN to deliver tangible results for its member states. The selection process remains inconclusive, with multiple candidates in the running.

Among the leading contenders are Rebeca Grynspan, former vice president of Costa Rica and head of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, and Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Additionally, Turkey has nominated Feridun Sinirlioglu, Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, for the position.

Current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to complete his term at the end of 2026. His successor is expected to assume office on January 1, 2027, making the selection process crucial for the future direction of the UN amidst increasing global challenges.
