Iran has accused Qatar of hindering its investigation into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots during a recent conflict, a claim that Qatar has firmly denied. Tehran asserts that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been awaiting clearance to travel to Qatar for months to probe the situation, according to Iranian armed forces official Mohammad Bagherzadeh. He has urged Doha to permit the visit and has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist in the matter.
Previously, Iran reported the recovery of the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was killed in an incident involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. However, Qatar has dismissed allegations of detaining the pilots. Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, stated that the pilots had violated Qatari airspace and that defensive measures were taken after failed attempts to communicate with them.
Furthermore, Qatar claims that its search and rescue teams have actively sought to locate the pilots and their remains. Doha has stated it coordinated with Iran regarding the transfer of one pilot’s remains that were recovered. The Qatari government maintains that Iranian authorities were invited back in April to send a team to receive details about the search and rescue efforts, but Iran has not responded to this invitation.
This dispute arises in the context of ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional nations, following a conflict that broke out earlier this year. Qatar has been playing a significant role in diplomacy, aiming to reduce these tensions and facilitate communication among the involved parties.
