Indonesia is in collaboration with the United States to ensure the repatriation of the body of Nicholas F. Goselin, an American pilot who was tragically killed in an attack orchestrated by Papua separatists in Yahukimo. The Free Papua Movement’s armed wing has taken responsibility for this assault, claiming the aircraft was targeted due to its alleged breach of a ban on civilian flights over territories under their control. The group also accused civilian aircraft of aiding Indonesian military operations by transporting troops and supplies.
The plane, operated by PT AMA, was engulfed in flames following the attack, although fortunately, the seven Indonesian passengers on board emerged unscathed. Authorities have since recovered and evacuated the remains of the pilot. In response to this incident, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed ongoing efforts with the US Embassy in Jakarta and other relevant agencies to facilitate consular access and arrange for the pilot’s body to be returned home. The Indonesian government has expressed its condemnation of all forms of violence against civilians and public service facilities, particularly those serving remote communities, and has reiterated its commitment to the safety of foreign nationals within its borders.
While the United States has stated it is closely observing the investigation into the attack, it has refrained from further commentary to honor the family’s privacy. Meanwhile, Indonesian authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to delve into the details of the incident.
