Vietnam, Malaysia Boost Defense Ties and Enhance Regional Partnership

Vietnam and Malaysia are intensifying their efforts to bolster defense collaboration as part of a broader strategy to enhance bilateral relations and promote regional stability. This development was underscored during discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. The meeting highlighted the ambassador’s significant contributions to strengthening the partnership between the two nations.

General Giang emphasized the achievements in defense relations, noting the importance of regular military exchanges, policy dialogue, and joint training efforts. He also pointed out the effective coordination at international and multilateral platforms as a testament to the growing cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia in the defense sector.

During the talks, Giang advocated for the continued execution of existing agreements and encouraged deeper engagement through high-level meetings and established defense cooperation mechanisms. He extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defense leaders and companies to participate in the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, slated to be held in Hanoi, as a way to further cement ties.

Ambassador Tan Yang Thai, reflecting on his tenure, expressed gratitude for the support provided by Vietnam’s defense ministry and military. He voiced optimism that the defense relationship between the two countries would continue to flourish, contributing to peace and prosperity across the region.
