Indonesia has taken a significant step in international artificial intelligence collaboration by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This decision was solidified during discussions between Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The talks highlighted Indonesia’s dedication to developing an AI governance framework that prioritizes equitable development, human-centered innovation, national sovereignty, and inclusive multilateralism, all while aligning with United Nations principles.
In a bid to strengthen its role within WAICO, Indonesia has put forward a proposal to secure a senior position within the organization’s secretariat. Additionally, Minister Airlangga emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation with China in the fields of artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. He specifically called for expedited market access for Indonesian exports and encouraged Chinese enterprises to enhance their investments in advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks within Indonesia.
Further underscoring the strategic partnership between the two nations, Airlangga expressed Indonesia’s support for China’s upcoming chairmanship of APEC in 2026. He also proposed the organization of a bilateral business summit, which would coincide with a planned meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This summit aims to further cement economic ties and collaboration between Indonesia and China.
The commitment to global AI cooperation and the proposals for increased collaboration with China reflect Indonesia’s broader strategy to position itself as a key player in the international AI landscape.
