United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commended Indonesia for its significant role in fostering global peace and multilateral cooperation. During the Foreign Policy Circle Talks in Jakarta, Guterres emphasized Indonesia’s active participation in international organizations such as the United Nations, ASEAN, G20, and BRICS, highlighting its diplomatic influence in the Asia-Pacific region and the Global South.

Guterres acknowledged Indonesia’s historical and ongoing contributions to international diplomacy, recalling the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, which was pivotal in promoting non-alignment and self-determination principles. He praised Indonesia’s efforts in conflict prevention, sustainable development, and human rights through its collaboration with ASEAN and the UN.

A focal point of Guterres’s remarks was Indonesia’s substantial involvement in UN peacekeeping missions. Currently, nearly 2,000 Indonesian military and police personnel are deployed across seven UN missions worldwide. During a visit to a peacekeeping training center in Sentul, West Java, Guterres met with Indonesian personnel preparing for deployment to the UN mission in the Central African Republic, applauding their training and dedication to international peacekeeping efforts.

Guterres underlined that Indonesia’s diplomatic engagements and peacekeeping contributions have significantly bolstered its role in facilitating dialogue and cooperation among nations. This recognition of Indonesia’s commitment to multilateralism underscores its importance as a global partner in maintaining peace and stability.
