Indonesia is leveraging its vast reserves of critical minerals, particularly nickel and copper, to bolster its role in the global artificial intelligence (AI) industry. According to Nezar Patria, the Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, the country aims to use mineral processing to create a resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure, which would add significant domestic value.
Nickel and copper are essential in building AI infrastructure, including components for batteries, electrical equipment, transmission networks, and systems that underpin data centers. With Indonesia accounting for approximately 62% of the world’s mined nickel production, the nation holds a pivotal position in the global mineral supply chain. Patria highlighted the importance of responsible processing, emphasizing environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices to maintain this advantage.
Beyond mineral resources, Patria noted that AI development demands reliable electricity, comprehensive fiber-optic networks, advanced data centers, cooling systems, skilled labor, and effective governance. These components are critical in transforming Indonesia into a prominent regional hub for AI, while also generating high-value jobs and enhancing domestic technological capabilities.
Indonesia’s strategic approach aims to integrate its mineral wealth with its expanding digital economy and growing technology workforce. This integration is seen as a pathway to elevate the country’s standing in the AI sector, ultimately fostering greater innovation and economic growth.
