In a series of intensified strikes, at least 12 people have lost their lives in Kyiv and its surrounding areas, marking the sixth night of continuous Russian drone and missile attacks. The onslaught, which primarily targeted the Ukrainian capital and vital infrastructure, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals in Kyiv, including six railway workers at a depot. Additionally, four more fatalities were reported in the nearby Boryspil region, and several others, including children, sustained injuries.
Ukrainian officials disclosed that the latest assault involved a substantial number of drones and ballistic missiles, with Kyiv and Odesa bearing the brunt of the attacks. Despite Ukraine’s air defenses managing to intercept a considerable portion of the incoming threats, several missiles still managed to strike their intended targets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out that Russia is exploiting the shortage of US-made Patriot air-defense interceptors, which are crucial for Ukraine in countering high-speed ballistic missiles. He emphasized that Russia’s attacks are calculated to inflict maximum damage on civilian lives, especially when Ukraine’s air-defense capabilities are insufficient.
The Ukrainian railway network has suffered significant disruptions due to the recent attacks, with the deaths of six depot employees highlighting the impact on essential services. The strikes have damaged railway facilities and interrupted operations, adding strain to a transport system vital for both civilian mobility and wartime logistics. Furthermore, Russia’s increased deployment of jet-powered drones, which Ukrainian officials find more challenging to intercept, has forced residents to seek shelter for extended periods and disrupted daily life in the capital.
In response to the Russian offensive, Ukraine has launched strikes targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure, including oil facilities and warehouses. This counteraction aims to exert both economic and military pressure on Moscow. The escalation occurs as the conflict remains at a stalemate on the battlefield, with little headway toward a diplomatic resolution. Ukrainian leaders are appealing to Western allies for enhanced air-defense systems, especially as winter approaches.
