UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza as the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches. He emphasized the need for a lasting political solution, increased humanitarian aid, and adherence to international law.
Guterres condemned the attack by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, and the capture of 251 hostages. Additionally, he highlighted the severe impact on Palestinians in Gaza, where according to health authorities, more than 74,200 have been killed during Israel’s military operations.
While acknowledging the temporary relief provided by a ceasefire announced in October 2025, Guterres noted that it has yet to achieve lasting security or adequate humanitarian support. He called for renewed efforts to end the suffering on both sides and to create conditions where Israelis and Palestinians can live securely and with dignity, with their rights protected.
